Boat Detailing Checklist: What's Included in a Full Detail
"Detailing" means different things to different shops. Here's what a genuinely thorough full detail should include so you know what to expect and what to ask about.
Exterior
Hand wash with marine-safe soap, wheel-to-waterline and above scrub of the hull, removal of waterline scum and algae staining, oxidation compounding where needed, machine polishing to restore gloss, and a protective wax, sealant, or ceramic coating application.
Deck and Non-Skid
Deep cleaning of non-skid surfaces (which trap dirt differently than smooth gelcoat), cleaning and conditioning of vinyl seating, and cleaning of hardware, cleats, and rails.
Metal and Hardware
Polishing of stainless steel rails, cleats, and hardware to remove rust staining and water spots, and treatment to slow future oxidation on metal.
Glass and Windshield
Cleaning and clarifying of windows, windshields, and enclosures, including removal of hard water spots that a standard wash won't touch.
Interior/Cabin (If Applicable)
Vacuuming, upholstery cleaning, cabin surface wipe-down, and odor treatment where needed.
Engine Bay and Bilge (Often an Add-On)
Degreasing and detailing of the engine compartment and bilge area — not always included in a "standard" detail, so it's worth confirming.
